Should you go for a certificate,
diploma, or a degree in real estate?
You should get
some kind of real estate qualifications on top of your license; especially if you are
a new agent! It is very impressing when your business card has an
abbreviation such as Dip. R.E., it tells your clients you are
knowledgeable and committed in your real
estate career and they will have more confident in working with you.
Should you go for a
professional designation instead of an academic qualification?
It depends.
In real estate, professional designations are good for networking.
Some of them are recognitions of your experience and sales volume; while
some of them put more emphasis on relevant knowledge.
Although it is
hard to say which one is better to boost your credential and your
knowledge, I had done my homework before I applied the master degree
program (see my opposite viewing points at
Designations
page):
-
Academic qualification costs you less money. The
fact is that you have to pay annual dues for your professional
designations; and once you have your diploma, you can keep it for life
FREE. I have surrendered two designations just because I did not
want to the annual fees.
-
You can keep your academic
qualification without other requirements, but not for all designations.
Many professional associations require their members to take continuing
education courses in order to keep their designations. The rationale of
having continuing education is good, but sometimes that is too much for people
who have too many designations.
- The general public can easily tell what an
academic qualification is. Abbreviations such as Dip RE and Cert. RE
clearly indicate they stand for Diploma in Real Estate and Certificate in Real
Estate. To the worst, a Dip BD will at least tell people that it is a
diploma qualification, although the abbreviation BD needs explanation (such as
Building Design). Most of the designations in real estate are not well
known to the public, even real estate practitioners may not be able to tell all
of them. One of the reasons is that, unlike the abbreviation used in
diplomas, abbreviations used in designations are not internationally
standardized.
-
You can keep your
academic qualification forever, but not designations. I hate to say
this but this is a fact. For someone who violate the association's
rule, such as unethical behaviour, or even committed a crime; their
designations will be revoked. An institution will not take back the
diploma they granted you no matter what you do after your graduations. Don't
get me wrong, I am not saying that you can do whatever you want after
getting your academic qualification.
As a real estate agent, you may
not have time to go to a class for the lecture. You need
flexibility in study. Distance learning is the only way to satisfy
your need. There are not too many
institutes offer programs in real estate; among them just a few offer
distance learning option. Below are some of the institutes that
offer distance learning real estate programs:
